Hillclimb - A History Lesson
It might surprise some people to realize that the sport of automotive hillclimb has been around since the early 1900's. One of the oldest known hillclimbs in the U.S., the Hillclimb to the Clouds in New Hampshire, had its first running in 1904.
One of the best known hillclimb events in the U.S., and perhaps the world, the Pikes Peak Hillclimb had its inaugural run in 1916, and now draws drivers and fans from all over the world.
In the Western North Carolina area, a 39 year legacy ended in 1995 when the Chimney Rock Hillclimb ran for the very last time.
Upon losing Chimney Rock, a suitable site was located nearby and the Beech Mountain Hillclimb ran from 1996-2001. The Blue Ridge Hillclimb, in Sparta, NC, was enjoyed from 2003-2006.
In 2007, the first annual Wolf Ridge Hillclimb was held, and a legend was born!
